How to Know If Your Boat Bumpers Need To be Replaced?

If you own a boat, you might understand when we say, “Exploring the open sea is a thrill not many get to experience.” But, this thrilling adventure is often cut short when equipment and boating accessories are at their worst conditions. One of the often overlooked yet key components is the boat bumper. They safeguard our vessels from collisions, impacts, and even docking mishaps.

Now, tell us, “When was the last time you replaced your boat bumper?” Is it hard to recall? Perhaps it was replaced way too long ago! We know your current bumpers may look fine. But, they may not work as they should if they haven’t been replaced in a while.

Look for these signs to identify if your boat bumpers are ready to be replaced –

1- Fading colors and cracks

The outer layer of a boat bumper is often its first line of defense. If you notice anything like cracks or fading colors, you need to inspect carefully. Bumpers easily sustain cosmetic changes, given they are constant exposure to UV rays and water. Of course, these changes may seem subtle. But, they can impact the structural integrity of the bumper overall.

Be on the safer side and get the bumper repaired or changed before it is too late!

2- Loss of flexibility

Boat bumpers are supposed to be flexible and agile.

However, over time, the material used for creating bumpers can lose its flexibility. This means they might become stiff and rigid.

To determine, gently squeeze and press your bumpers. Do they feel like cardboard or rubber? If your answer is the former, get the bumper replaced.

Bumpers that feel like rubber are flexible, meaning they can absorb the impact and decrease the damage to the vessel.

3- Inflation issues

Boat bumpers that are designed to be inflated provide an extra layer of protection. Check for any noticeable deflation or uneven inflation. It could compromise their ability to absorb shocks.

You can use a pressure gauge to ensure the bumpers are at the recommended PSI level. If they are losing air faster, it is high time for replacement.

4- Abrasions and scuff marks

Scratches, scuff marks, or abrasions can happen during docking. Hence, most boat owners tend to overlook them.

When these marks sustain more damage, the bumper becomes anything but useful. Your boat may become vulnerable to collisions. Instead of waiting until the abrasions and scuff marks get worse, repair them on time or get the bumpers replaced.
